▶ What are gallstones?

The main component of most gallstones is cholesterol, a fat (lipid) that is usually soluble in bile (Bililubin, which is insoluble in water).

These microcrystals accumulate in the gallbladder and agglomerate to form solid particles.

Another type of gallstone is formed in the same way and is synthesized, with calcium not completely broken down, into a calcium compound or bilirubin (the main pigment in bile).

Pigment stones are called gallstones. Stones made up of bilirubin are black (formed in the gallbladder) or brown (formed in the bile ducts).
